This bill requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to include certain non-opioid pain medications in its national formulary and drug standardization list. It defines a non-opioid pain management drug or biological product as one approved by the FDA to reduce postoperative pain or produce postsurgical or regional analgesia without acting on opioid receptors.
Sec. 2, Inclusion of certain non-opioid pain medications in the VA national formulary: The bill amends title 38 to add a definition for non-opioid pain management drugs or biological products. It requires the VA Secretary to include such a drug or biological product in the VA national formulary within one year after it becomes eligible for temporary additional payment under Medicare or for separate payment under federal regulations, and also to include it on the VA drug standardization list. However, funds from the Cost of War Toxic Exposures Fund cannot be used for these amendments. The VA Secretary must implement these changes within 90 days of the bill's enactment.
