This bill amends the Public Health Service Act to authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services to address priority substance use disorder and serious mental illness treatment needs through long-acting injectable medications.
Sec. 2, Priority substance use disorder and serious mental illness treatment needs: This section amends Section 509 of the Public Health Service Act. It updates the section heading and various subsections to include 'serious mental illness' alongside 'substance use disorder'. It revises the list of authorized activities to include: access to FDA-approved long-acting injectable medications for treating these conditions; lab testing and supportive counseling; and training on using these medications with associated clinical services like counseling. It also replaces the previous subsections (d) and (e) with a new requirement for an annual report to Congress on program outcomes, starting one year after enactment. Finally, it applies these changes to grants made after the bill's enactment date.
