Summary

This bill requires the Secretary of Commerce to run a public awareness and education campaign about artificial intelligence (AI) for people in the United States, covering its benefits, risks, and how common it is in daily life.

Sec. 2, AI Campaign: Within 180 days of the bill becoming law, the Secretary of Commerce, working with other federal agencies like the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, must start a campaign to inform the public about AI's benefits, risks, and prevalence.

Sec. 2, Outreach: The campaign must set key performance indicators to measure success, help share up-to-date AI information and legal rights, promote best practices for detecting whether digital media is made by humans or AI (including deepfakes and chatbots), and target outreach to groups like senior citizens who are vulnerable to AI scams. It also must educate the public on AI's role in daily life, such as text-to-speech and route planning, and in commercial uses like fraud detection and financial trading, plus promote AI workforce opportunities, including in the federal government and through higher education.

Sec. 2, Expert Consultation: The Secretary must consult with experts from academia, research, public-private partnerships, private industry (including AI developers, deployers, and users), and community organizations with AI expertise.

Sec. 2, Report: Within one year of starting the campaign, the Secretary must report to Congress on the campaign's activities, including the key performance indicators used and recommendations for future actions if any areas were not successful.

Sec. 2, No Additional Funds: No extra money is authorized to be set aside for carrying out this bill.
