This bill requires the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to temporarily exempt buprenorphine products approved for treating opioid use disorder from the Suspicious Orders Report System (SORS) until 270 days after the opioid public health emergency declared in 2017 expires. It also requires the Department of Justice and Department of Health and Human Services to report on whether the exemption increased access to treatment and recommend whether buprenorphine should remain exempt after the emergency ends.
Sec. 2, Removal of buprenorphine products from SORS during opioid public health emergency: The DEA Administrator must temporarily exempt all buprenorphine products approved for opioid use disorder treatment from the SORS system, including related reporting requirements, until 270 days after the opioid public health emergency expires. Within 90 days after the emergency expires, the Department of Justice and Department of Health and Human Services must conduct a comprehensive report on whether the exemption increased patient access to buprenorphine treatment and make a recommendation to the White House and Congress about whether buprenorphine should remain exempt from SORS after the emergency ends.
