Summary

This bill aims to improve artificial intelligence (AI) literacy education for students and educators from kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12). It authorizes the National Science Foundation to make competitive awards to support research and development of AI literacy curricula and evaluation methods.

Sec. 2, Preparing K-12 educators and students for an AI literate future: The Director of the National Science Foundation may make merit-reviewed, competitive awards to universities or nonprofits (or consortia) to support research for developing K-12 AI literacy curricula and evaluation methods. Award funds can be used for activities such as creating learner-centered, project-based curricula; providing professional learning opportunities for educators and school leaders to enhance AI literacy; developing AI literacy evaluation tools; designing professional development courses and mentoring; creating hands-on learning tools; and augmenting existing curricula to include AI literacy. The Director may use new or existing programs to carry out this section. The bill defines 'AI literacy' as age-appropriate knowledge and ability to use AI effectively, critically interpret outputs, solve problems, and use AI safely and ethically. It also defines 'artificial intelligence' by reference to existing law, and 'Director' as the Director of the National Science Foundation.
