Summary

This bill expands the types of health care professionals who can perform medical disability examinations for the Department of Veterans Affairs under temporary licensure, and requires a report on the use of that authority. Sec. 2, Improvements to temporary licensure requirements for contract health care professionals who perform medical disability examinations for the Department of Veterans Affairs: (a) Expansion: The bill amends existing law to add podiatrists, dentists, optometrists, and other health care professionals specified by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to the list of professionals eligible for temporary licensure to perform VA medical disability exams under contract. It also makes a conforming change to update the list of professionals in another related law. (b) Report: Within 15 months after enactment, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs must submit a report to the Senate and House Veterans' Affairs Committees covering the one-year period after enactment. The report must include the number of exams conducted under this authority, the number per state or territory, the types of health care professionals who conducted them, the number of exams erroneously conducted without a proper contract or by an unauthorized professional, and the Secretary's plan to correct such errors.
