This bill amends the Medicare program to cover external infusion pumps and certain home infusion drugs that cannot be self-administered. It clarifies that these items meet the 'appropriate for use in the home' criteria for durable medical equipment under Medicare.
Sec. 2, Medicare coverage of external infusion pumps and non-self-administrable home infusion drugs: This section adds a new sentence to the Social Security Act stating that an external infusion pump and its associated drug or supplies are treated as appropriate for home use and covered as durable medical equipment if three criteria are met: (1) FDA labeling requires the drug to be prepared immediately before use or administered by a health care professional, or both; (2) a qualified home infusion therapy supplier administers the drug safely in the patient's home; and (3) the labeling specifies infusion via an external pump at least once per month. The section also requires that any home infusion drug meeting these criteria be included in the existing Local Coverage Determination for external infusion pumps, with payment authorized for associated home infusion therapy services, effective from the date of enactment or the drug's FDA approval, whichever is later.
